This past Saturday the stars came out in support of Gilda’s Club of Greater Toronto, an organization founded to honour the memory of Gilda Radner who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 1989. While she was in treatment she visited a support community in Los Angeles, where she found herself bonding with other people going through the same experience as her. It was Gilda’s dream that communities such as that exist all over the world so that anyone whose lives had been touched by cancer could have a support network. The first Gilda’s Club opened in New York City in 1995, and the Toronto branch opened its doors in 2001. It’s Always Something is an annual benefit supporting Gilda’s Club of Greater Toronto. The special evening brings together all kinds of talents in a unique variety style show that is guaranteed to entertain. In its eleventh year the show is still going strong, and this year featured performances by Nelly Furtado, Glass Tiger, Louise Pitre, Ron James and Eric McCormack and was hosted by Russell Peters. It was a fantastic evening which featured many laughs, a few tears and wonderful music. After the show, guests mingled in the lobby of The Sony Centre and enjoyed scrumptious food and plentiful drink as they shared memories of people whose lives had been touched by cancer and who had benefited from Gilda’s Club. Despite the sombre nature of the event, it was an evening of celebration that focused on all the wonderful things that make life worth living and worth fighting for.
