Last week I had the opportunity to take advantage of the warmer weather and spend the day in the Niagara region and then take in The Phantom of the Opera at the Shea's Performing Arts Centre in Buffalo, NY. The Shea's Performing Arts Centre is a stunning venue just a couple of hours from the Toronto downtown core - and is well worth the trip to take in a show and spend some time exploring all the region has to offer. Canadian Stage presents Nongogo, The Meal, Hatched, Ubu and the Truth Commission, Dominion and Chandelier in a three-week festival of South African performance as part of Spotlight South Africa. Christopher Durang's Tony Award winning play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, opened last night at the Panasonic Theatre. The play's premise is reminiscent of a sitcom: Masha, a famous actress past her prime (and the most successful sibling) returns home for a weekend to visit her siblings Sonia and Vanya. Sonia and Vanya have spent the last 15 years caring for their aging parents who have since passed away. Sonia is especially jealous of the success Masha has had. (more...)

Factory and Native Earth Performing Arts present the Toronto premiere of THE UNPLUGGING by Yvette Nolan, directed by Nina Lee Aquino, and winner of the 2013 Jessie Award for Outstanding New Play (Vancouver). The show stars two veterans of the Toronto theatre community, Diana Belshaw and Allegra Fulton, and features newcomer Umed Amin.
