Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the U.S.- based national touring companies of WICKED and THE BOOK OF MORMON, a total of $193,857 has been raised this fall for the Actors' Fund of Canada, the lifeline for Canada's entertainment industry. The money, raised by WICKED and THE BOOK OF MORMON company members as part of U.S.-based Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS fall 2014 fundraising campaign, will help support vulnerable members of the Canadian entertainment industry who are facing injury, illness or other crisis situations. William Shakespeare wrote in The Merchant of Venice: 'How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world.' In 2014, the Stratford Festival shone by raising a record-breaking $66,686 for the Actors' Fund of Canada, the lifeline for Canada's entertainment industry. Company member giving to the Fund through payroll donations, proceeds from Madness Mug sales, audience collections and a benefit performance of Hay Fever, helped to provide much-needed financial aid to entertainment industry members who are facing times of crisis. The audience leapt to its feet at curtain call to cheer on the cast - and it was well deserved. Is Garth Drabinsky aiming for a comeback in the Toronto and Broadway Theatre scene? It seems unlikely considering he's been convicted of and served a sentence in Canada for fraud and forgery that occurred during his time as the head of Livent. Drabinsky was never extradited to the United States and the charges relating to 16 counts of fraud and conspiracy have not been tested in the American courts. (more...)

Tarragon Theatre presents the English-language premiere of Abyss, written and translated by Tarragon's first-ever International playwright-in-residence Maria Milisavljevic and directed by Artistic Director Richard Rose. This poetic thriller about a missing woman premiered (as Brandung) at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, winning the prestigious 2013 Kleist Promotional Award for Young Dramatists.
