BWW Review: Mirvish's OUR COUNTRY'S GOOD is Brilliant and Imaginative
by Alan Henry on September 18, 2014

The play Our Country's Good had its opening night last night at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. The play, which has been brought across the pond by presenter David Mirvish is about a colony of convicts who are cast in a play by an officer of the navy at the urging of his captain. Of course, not all members of the colony take kindly to the sentiment of using convicts as actors over laborers. Ultimately, the underdogs do triumph and the play is a hit. (more...)

by Alan Henry on September 08, 2014

The film adaptation of 'The Last Five Years,' based on the musical by Jason Robert Brown, had its world premiere last night at the Toronto International Film Festival. BWW Review: WICKED Continues To Amaze Audiences 9 Years After Toronto Debut
by Alan Henry on September 05, 2014

One can't help but leave the Ed Mirvish Theatre on a high after a performance of 'Wicked,' a musical now in its 11th year on Broadway. The Wizard sings a tune in the show which begins with 'I am a sentimental man,' and as I watched him call the guards just before Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) takes flight at the close of the first act - I realized that this lyric perfectly summed up my thoughts on the production I was seeing tonight. BWW Interview: Julie Taymor on A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and Theatre on Film
by Alan Henry on September 15, 2014

Julie Taymor is no stranger to being innovative in the theater. In 1997 she became the first woman to win the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for her production of 'The Lion King.' That same night she also walked away with the prize for costume design. No one had ever seen a production on Broadway that was even remotely similar to 'The Lion King.' Taymor used to great effect techniques she had learned while studying masked dance-drama and puppetry in Indonesia (she had also studied these techniques at the American Society for Eastern Arts in Seattle.) Her combination of stunning visuals and expanded story telling led to an immediate hit - which is still running today and is one of the highest grossing musicals of all time. (more...)
