Breakdown

Hurricane Sandy has just ravaged the lifelong home of Marty and Mary Murphy. But the storm has ripped apart more than just the walls: with their neighbors too devastated to stay, the couple's beloved Staten Island community is in danger of disappearing forever. Determined to rebuild, Marty wages a campaign to save his neighborhood and his home, but when the Murphys' sons arrive to help their parents dig out, past betrayals come rushing to the surface.

Seeking:

MARTY MURPHY: 62. Blue-collar. A community man with a fierce sense of loyalty and entrenched ideas of the way the world should work. Tough but charming, with a natural charisma and warmth, and a good sense of humor. Capable of changing moods on a dime.

MARY MURPHY: 60. A woman of faith. Sweet, but never saccharine. A loving mother and very devoted wife, who has made a life out of looking past the faults of those she loves. Puts everyone else’s needs first.

SAL MURPHY: 34. Marty & Mary’s older son. Ambitious, smart. Grew up in Staten Island, but has left the old neighborhood behind for Manhattan. His innate sense of humor and warmth have been chipped away by an unforgiving family, but they're still there beneath his exasperation. He was never the golden boy, but he's done well for himself.

BRIAN MURPHY: 31. Marty & Mary’s younger son. An irresistible charmer and a recovering drug user. Inherited his father's quick laugh and instant likeability. Until a recent, brief stint in prison, he lived a dangerously charmed life of being rewarded for the wrong things. He’s had troubles, but is sincerely trying to learn from them and reform.

PHILIP CARTER: Early 60s. Working class. A retired auto mechanic shop owner. A friendly man with an easy sense of humor. Avuncular and kind. A natural peacekeeper.

ANDREA CARTER: Early 60s. Philip’s wife. Also working class. Funny, shrewd, and opinionated. Extroverted and chatty. The kind of great friend and strong woman who quickly becomes more sister than friend.

EMILY MANCINI: 31. Philip & Andrea’s daughter, and Brian's former high school sweetheart. Now a wry, self-aware woman coming to terms with a crumbling marriage and the fact that life at 31 doesn't look like what she thought it would. Trying to be pragmatic, but the romantic girl she was isn’t totally gone. Works in the city, probably lives in Brooklyn or Queens.
