I've heard rumors for the past 6 months, and today someone posted a cryptic message on the Mirvish Facebook page, that a Toronto production of the new version of Les Mis will open mid next year. I have also heard not until 2013. Anyone else hear this or know anything?
The tour is produced by Cameron Mackintosh AND NETworks. Mirvish has a solid relationship with Mackintosh. Dancap has a solid relationship with NETworks.
Meaning Mirvish is bringing it in or Mirvish is producing a sit down?
Friends of mine on the tour told me a while back that they were told Toronto would indeed be on their route at some point.... But plans could have changed.
I can't imagine a Mirvish Produced Sit Down could run very long. The original ran for a long time, and at least two tours have come through. It's feasible that it could be brought in for a few months, but another open-end sit down?
The first Les Mis ran for just over 18 months, and came back for about 6 month, with two years in between. The last time it was there was in 1999 with Wilkinson in the lead.
The Mirvish 2012 production would be a sit down new build opening after War Horse.
Indeed. If it's actually just that the announcement and casting were rushed and they want to take their time finding the right people that's fine, but this has all blown up very quickly.
The whole idea of a sit down production in TO sounded questionable to me in the first place. As the launch of a touring production maybe, but isn't there already a tour making the rounds*? Is the North American audience clamoring for Les Mis? They can see real 'revolutionaries' in the Occupy Movement for free.
And announcing the show without casting in mind was also questionable, esp. if, as Mackintosh says, they want to go with a younger cast. They would be hard-pressed to find a young, talented Canadian cast that has any name recognition--and a no-name $100+ stage show competing against a $12 movie ticket to see Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway?
I think this is an indefinite run that's going to turn into an indefinite postponement (if not outright cancellation).
*I noticed that the US Tour is hitting a lot of American locales (Buffalo; Boston; Michigan; Ohio) that a Toronto production would want to draw audiences from. This seems to further doom a long-running Toronto production. http://www.lesmis.com/us-tour/
Coach Bob knew it all along: you've got to get obsessed and stay obsessed. You have to keep passing the open windows. (John Irving, The Hotel New Hampshire)
Auditions are going on for all the roles, except for child Cosette and child Gavroche, with call backs in May. Apparently child Cosette and child Gavroche will be played by the same actors who will play the "grown-up" versions . I wonder if they will make a new poster with a teen Cosette? lol I think it will sound and look strange if you ask me. On the other hand this maybe suggests that they are planning to tour the show, and they do not want to drag kids along. Opening in September.
Interesting. Seems Mirvish is short theatres though. If Warhorse is at the Princess (most likely still running in Sept) and then during the Fall there are 2 tours running at the same time (Sister Act and La Cage) where is Les Mis?
CORRECTION! It will be debuting in September 2013. Rehearsals starts in 2013, but they are holding the auditions now. I guess they do not want other Canadian venues scoop up the talents, as this is what stopped them for this year. Still no news on the kids' roles.

Last I had heard this was being put on the back burner (or shelved all together). I can't really see a sit down being opened in the Royal Alex now. The Ed Mirvish has got the Wizard of Oz booked for a while and with the Princess shutting down. The Royal is their only major space for touring shows which bring in a lot of their profits.
