A staged reading of COME FROM AWAY, by David Hein and Irene Sankoff, will be presented at Toronto's Panasonic Theatre today, March 18 with showtimes of 3 pm and 8 pm. COME FROM AWAY was first developed and presented as a 45-minute reading as part of the inaugural Canadian Music Theatre Project in 2012. Expanded to a two-act musical, this staged reading follows sold-out presentations at Connecticut's Goodspeed Opera House as part of the Festival of New Artists in January, and a two-week run at Theatre Sheridan in February. Admission is first come, first serve, and a pay what you can donation to Theatre Sheridan at the door.
COME FROM AWAY is a rocking musical about when 38 planes from around the world were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland on September 11, 2001 - doubling its population in an instant. While the world witnessed the worst acts of humankind, the stranded passengers had their faith in humanity restored by the spirited people who comforted those who had 'come from away'.
Still in development, COME FROM AWAY is directed by Brian Hill, Book, Music and Lyrics by David Hein and Irene Sankoff. Hein and Sankoff are the creators of the award-winning hit musical, MY MOTHER'S LESBIAN JEWISH WICCAN WEDDING. The March 18th performances will feature third-year Sheridan Music Theatre Performance students Corey Agnew, Josh Blackstock, Curtis Brown, Camila Diaz-Varela, James Frantowski, Jake Foy, Joanna Fraser, Kathryn Kerr, Natalie Mancuso, Trevor Patt, Claire Rouleau, Jenny Weisz, Erin Winsor and Adrian Zeyl.
