I Love You Because had its Canadian Premiere this past Friday courtesy of Angelwalk Theatre, who are presenting the show at the Toronto Centre for the Arts for the next two weeks. The show was a hit off-Broadway in 2005, and features a cast of some of Toronto’s best and brightest. The show is inspired by Pride and Prejudice and tells the story of love and relationships in modern day New York City (think Friends set to music!).
At the centre of the piece is Austin (played by Jeff Madden) who has his heart broken when he discovers his long-term girlfriend and supposed ‘love of his life’ is cheating on him. He begrudgingly accepts the help of older brother Jeff (Jay Davis) in seeking out a fling to help him overcome his heartache. The ‘fling’ in question is free-spirit Marcy (Elena Juatco) who has also just come out of a long-term relationship and together with the help of her best friend Diana (Gabi Epstein) is looking for a Mr. Wrong to help recover from her heartache. The four main characters spend the play coming together (and then falling apart) in a variety of clever, humourous and touching ways before arriving at the ultimate conclusion that it is important to love someone because of their flaws, and not in spite of them.
