Parental woes may soon be playing out in their full dysfunction on the Canadian stage if Mirvish Productions' plans to bring the Broadway hit 'God of Carnage' to Toronto materialize.
Mirvish Productions, the theatre Production Company responsible for bringing such hits as 'The Sound of Music', 'The Lion King', 'We Will Rock You', and the upcoming 'Rock of Ages' to Canadian audiences, is planning to mount the Broadway sensation in 2011, according to a report in the Globe and Mail.
The ties between Mirvish Productions and 'God of Carnage' are strong; Producer David Mirvish is an investor in the Broadway production, and was also an investor in the 2008 London production, which starred Ralph Fiennes and Tamsin Greig. According to the report, the production team has been "putting out feelers" in the acting community, eyeing an all-Canadian production.

'God of Carnage' opened in the West End in 2008. After receiving rave reviews, the play, dubbed a comedy of manners without the manners, opened on Broadway March 22, 2009, starring Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini, and Marcia Gay Harden. The comedy penned by Yasmine Reza opened to virtually unanimous praise. The play deals with the aftermath of a playground altercation between two boys and what happens when their parents meet to talk about it. The production earned both Daniels and Gandolfini a Tony award nomination for Leading Actor in a Play, with Davis and Harden receiving respective nominations for Leading Actress. Marcia Gay Harden took home the Tony, and the comedy won the Tony Award for Best Play and Best Direction of a Play (Matthew Warchus). The play also won the 2009 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.
A new Broadway cast was recently announced and will join the show on November 17. The new cast consists of Christine Lahti, Annie Potts, Jimmy Smits, and Ken Scott, who was an original cast member of the West End production.
