Amicus Productions Presents THE TALE OF THE ALLERGIST'S WIFE, 2/2-11

Amicus-Productions-Presents-THE-TALE-OF-THE-ALLERGISTS-WIFE-22-5-20010101

Amicus Productions presents this savvy and hilarious script about a woman struggling to find her present self, which she can only do by meeting her past at Fairview Library Theatre, running February 2-4, 9-11 at 8p.m. and February 4 and 5 at 2p.m. Tickets are $20 regular, $18 for students and seniors. Group rates are available. For tickets or information, call 416-860-6176. All seating is reserved.

An award-winning hit on Broadway, this sophisticated comedy from New York-based Charles Busch promises wall-to-wall laughs. Marjorie, the wife of philanthropic allergist, Dr. V. Ira Taub, is engulfed in a life crisis of Medea-like proportions: her children are grown, her beloved therapist died recently and her mother, obsessed with bowel movements, grates on her nerves. She tries to lose herself in a world of art galleries, foreign films and avant-garde theatre, but finds she is barely able to rouse herself from the sofa. Her spirits suddenly soar when a fascinating and incredibly worldly friend from her childhood appears on her doorstep. Unfortunately for the couple, Lee the saviour who infuses Marjorie with life becomes Lee the unwelcome and sinister guest in short order.

Charles Busch is the author and star of such plays as The Lady in Question, Red Scare on Sunset and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, which ran for five years and is among the longest-running plays in Off-Broadway history. His play The Tale of the Allergist's Wife ran for 777 performances on Broadway, winning Busch the Outer Circle Critics John Gassner Award and earned the script a Tony nomination for Best Play.

The play features Maureen Lukie as Marjorie, Clive Lacey as her husband, Ira, Carol McLennan as Lee Green, Paulette St-Amour as Marjorie’s mother, Frieda, and Lionel Boodlal as their doorman, Mohammed. The play is helmed by director Victoria Shepherd, who previously directed Moonlight and Magnolias and 7 Stories for Amicus, as well as productions for the Toronto Fringe Festival, the Alumnae Theatre and the Village Playhouse.

Amicus is in its 33nd year of entertaining audiences and providing their members with the opportunity to share in the process of creating theatre. Volunteers are always welcome. The season has included All My Sons by Arthur Miller, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife and the comedy, Prelude to a Kiss by Craig Lucas.
